Will You Need A Business Licence?

1. Gambling

Yes, it might be fun to have your own slot machine, but in all honesty any casino or gambling operation that isn't registered is looking for trouble from the police. Of course, don't confuse this with a casual wager between friends - it's perfectly fine to gamble privately with your friends but as soon as you start running it as a business youre on very dodgy ground. As a tightly regulated industry, applying for a license to turn your home into a gambling premises is unlikely to work.

2. Alcohol

Sure, you can serve a few drinks to guests, but as soon as you start running it as a business youre going to be in trouble. Never charge your guests for drinks as it changes what you are doing in the eyes of the law drastically. Failure to comply with this can net you years in jail and hefty fines.

3. Doctors

Medical endevours might seem like a good idea at first glance, but in order to do even the simplest of first aid you will need a licence. Of couse, this extends to other medical industries as well, including dentists, opticians, and even vets. You might think itd be fine to turn your home into an animal hospital, but you need to be qualified and licensed. The only exception is if you really are, say, a vetrenarian in real life. Then you can do work from home, but be sure to have your home inspected and listed as a place of business, complete with a business licence for the property in an inconspicuous location.

4. Children

Whether it is day care, nannying or babysitting, you actually need a licence to do this out of your own home. It is extremely difficult to do this right but it can be done. It just costs a lot of time and money.

5. Food

Selling food is almost synonomous with needing to register for a business licence. You might think youre a great chef and you can host guests in your own kitchen, but for hygiene and safety reasons this just can't happen. Raw meat especially can result in legal action against you. Food licences aren't too hard to get, luckily, but you will have to jump through a number of hoops including health inspections and hygiene qualifications.
