  • Identifying Breast Cancer Symptoms  By : Morgan Hamilton
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in this present day and age. Women around the world are susceptible to breast cancer while men are prone to develop prostate cancer. Let us focus our attention the most common form of cancer in women, and one of the most common types of cancer in general.

Research statistics indicate that one in every seven women who live up to the age of 90 will develop breast cancer. However, the statistics are a bit skewed because this disease is especially prevalent in some families. Women who have a family history of being afflicted with this type of cancer have a greater chance of developing this disease. You should stay especially vigilant for breast cancer symptoms if the women in your family have a history of breast cancer.

  • Women With Breast Cancer Join Together To Form Sisterhood  By : Stacey Moore
Sisterhood can mean many things-sharing dreams, achieving goals or counting on others. Little did the women in Bakersfield, Calif., know that something as shocking as a breast cancer diagnosis would bring strangers together into a sisterhood of support, friendship and hope for the future. Thanks to Nancy Pelton, who was first diagnosed in 1998, a new kind of support network was born to respond to the unique needs of women with HER2-positive breast cancer. HER2-positive breast cancer is considered an aggressive form of the disease that accounts for approximately 25 percent of all breast cancer cases, and is caused by an overexpression of a gene called HER2 in tumor cells.

While receiving her weekly treatments after a recurrence in 2001, Nancy, a self-described "talker," would strike up conversations with other patients also receiving treatment at the infusion center. "In addition to talking to the nurses, meeting other women who were in the same situation really helped make my experience a more positive one," said Pelton. But due to different treatment protocols, she rarely saw the same person twice. Then one day, she sat next to another woman with breast cancer receiving the same weekly treatment. After talking and laughing together, Nancy asked if she'd like to schedule their next weekly treatment session at the same time and, from there, the HER2 Sisterhood was born. Since 2004, the group has continued to grow as more women with HER2-positive breast cancer heard about the Sisterhood.
  • Help In Reducing Breast Cancer Recurrence  By : Stacey Moore
Thanks to earlier detection and improved treatments, women have more options to treat breast cancer. Additionally, prevention of breast cancer recurrence remains an urgent priority for the more than 2 million who have had breast cancer in the United States.

Approximately one-third of women with hormone-dependent early breast cancer will experience a recurrence-half of those recurrences will occur five years following initial treatment with surgery. Understanding one's own risk of recurrence and available treatment options is important. With appropriate therapy, a woman can reduce the risk of her cancer returning or spreading outside of the breast to other tissues and organs, such as the stomach, brain and liver-called distant metastases. Cancer that spreads to other parts of the body increases the likelihood that a woman will die from the disease.

  • Fda Approves New Treatment Option For The Adjuvant Treatment Of Her2-positive  By : Stacey Moore
When Tammy Padgett, a young mother of two, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 after feeling a lump in her breast, she was concerned about her diagnosis and how it would affect her future and family. After testing, physicians told her she had human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive breast cancer. Research has shown that women with HER2-positive breast cancer have a greater likelihood of recurrence, poorer prognosis and decreased survival compared to women with HER2-negative breast cancer. It affects approximately 25 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer.

"I was scared but I was determined to do everything I could to fight breast cancer," said Padgett. "I traveled out of state and eventually worked with a local doctor who convinced me to enroll in a clinical trial of the breast cancer drug Herceptin, which ended up being the right move for me."

Women with breast cancer often breathe a sigh of relief when they reach the five-year disease-free mark. While this is a significant milestone, breast cancer recurrence remains an ongoing risk for many women. • A Mammogram Saved My Life  By : Stacey Moore
So, it's been two years. I mentioned last year in this column that a mammogram saved my life. Am I grateful! Who would have thought I would need a lifesaving mammogram (special X-rays of the breast that can detect cancer)? I lived a healthy life-never smoked, never a drinker, careful with my diet, and had led an active lifestyle. Fortunately, since I turned 40, I had regular screenings for breast cancer. It saved my life.

At 51, I had a suspicious mammogram, then a needle biopsy, which showed a tiny, aggressive cancer in my breast-so small it was removed by the biopsy itself. I just had to have a little tissue removed, which confirmed it hadn't spread. Because I'd caught it early, I'm cancer-free.
