As you progress in your climbing, you are going to be reaching higher and higher heights. To get down from your successful climb, you are going to have to rappel.
Rappelling is simply the act of lowering yourself back down to earth after blissfully completing a climb. When doing the climb, gravity was you enemy. With rappelling, it is your friend as long as you go about it correctly. Gravity never gives up, so you have to be careful. - Basic Rock Climbing Terminology By : Nomad Rick

Most people think rock climbing is a fairly edgy sport just to begin with. In truth, edges mean something entirely different and unique to the sport.
Most people have a misunderstand view of rock climbing from what they see in the movies. You know the movies I am talking about. Ones such as “Cliffhanger” where Sylvester Stallone hangs by his arms and jerks himself to and fro up the mountain for a couple hundred feet. Yeah, I would like to see that! - Tips That Will Help Your Climbing By : Nomad Rick
A few helpful tips are always worth their weight in gold when you start learning something new. While they may not be gold, here are some climbing tips you should consider.
When you first start climbing, there is a tendency to want to just walk up and start pulling yourself up the face of whatever you are climbing. Go ahead. It is natural. Once you are exhausted, it is time to start considering how it should really be done. Here are some tips that might shed some light on the subject. - Understanding River Rapid Classifications By : Nomad Rick
There is something about rapids on a river that make people excited. Oh, yeah. I gotta try that! Before you hop into the river on a kayak, raft, canoe or branch, you need to take a minute to understand river classifications.
Not all whitewater on a river is equal. Some rapids come in the form of minor disturbances that are fun, but not too treacherous. On the other end of the scale, there are the rapids where you are sure death is feet away and it may very well be. So, how do you know if you are going to get a little excitement, a medium level or a meeting with your maker? You just look up the classification of the rapids in front of you or read on. - Kayaking With The Flow By : Nomad Rick
If you are taking up kayaking, you need to become one with the flow. No, I am not talking about Star Wars. I am talking about the motion of the water in your river of choice.
The river giveth and taketh away. The river is going from here to there regardless of what you think or do. Understand how it works and you can paddle all day to your heart’s delight. Fail to understand and you will be exhausted and miserable within 30 minutes. It all has to do with the flow. - A Guide To River Obstructions By : Nomad Rick
As you probably know, most rivers do not just flow unimpeded. There are obstructions that force the water to flow out and around them. These obstructions can be rocks, sandbars, trees and just about anything that can stand up to the force of the water. When kayaking a river, obstructions are your friends.
Obstructions in a river provide you with plenty of opportunities to do things. The first thing you have to deal with is which way to go. There isn’t any correct answer, but you will often see different conditions on either side of the obstruction. Sometimes, you can even hear one side is more aggressive then the other. - Kayaking From One Side Of The River To The Other By : Nomad Rick
There you are standing on the shore. A hundred feet across the river on the other shore sit your buddies. And they have the food and beverages! How do you get across?
Crossing a river with a decent flow can be a bit…err, unpleasant. The basic idea is to get from your side to the other side with the minimum amount of strain and distance going downstream. There are two ways to go about this – the accepted way and my way. - Getting In And Out Of Eddies When Kayaking By : Nomad Rick
If you are just getting into kayaking, you should know that eddies are your friend. No, eddie is not a person. It is a natural rest stop on a river.
An eddie is relatively peaceful area of water in the middle of a current of water. How can this be? Well, you will find eddies behind obstacles in the current. A classic obstacle is your average boulder. As the water flows around the boulder, a slight reverse current is created behind the boulder. This occurs because the water does not immediately come together behind the boulder. Think about it and you will figure it out. - Learning To Kiss The Rock Or Buy A New Kayak By : Nomad Rick
Paddling a river is an immense joy because you get an intimate feel of the power of nature below you in the flowing water. Ah, but what if mother nature throws you a curve?
Kayaking is a multi-tiered sport. There are those that prefer rapids and only rapids. Others like to get out and cruise a river to take in the serenity of nature. If you prefer rapids, rocks are your friends. If you prefer to cruise, rocks can be a problem. This is particularly true if they barely break the water or are just below the surface. - Base Jumping: A Truly Extreme Sport By : Gray Rollins -
BASE jumping is not a sport for the faint of heart. Athletes who practice this extreme sport climb to the top of tall buildings, canyons, or other structures; jump off; enjoy a period of free falling; then open a parachute and coast to the ground.
The acronym BASE stands for building, antennae, span, and earth; which make up a comprehensive list of what kinds of fixed objects BASE jumpers plummet from. Span is a term that includes all sorts of bridges, or any other structures that span over a valley or chasm. Earth means anything from cliffs to mountains to canyons. - Rock Climbing: Start Local And Go Global By : Gray Rollins -

Extreme sports like street luging, skateboarding on rails and ramps, and snow boarding off nearly impossible jumps are hotter today than they have ever been before. The athletes who pursue these challenging activities often become as dedicated as Olympians and spend hours every day practicing and improving their technique in order to be able to enjoy the thrill that only making the perfect ollie or dropping a hill on a buttboard can bring. Extreme athletes often refer to the adrenaline rush of competing as being “amped,” and many say that there is no other feeling in the world that is as satisfying. For most of these rough and tumble athletes, part of the appeal of extreme sports is the danger.
Unlike sports that are regulated by official certified judges and require the athletes to wear protective gear and perform with ship shape equipment, extreme sports competitions sometimes include relatively unprotected athletes competing on somewhat ramshackle paraphernalia, like luge boards made out of skateboards with plywood additions. These conditions lead to greater thrills for many of the participants, because the more dangerous a situation is the more adrenaline the body produces, leading to the feeling of being “amped.” However, the long term damage that results from the kinds of injuries that many extreme athletes endure often leaves these enthusiastic men and women feeling less than thrilled. Whether or not the excitement of extreme sports is worth the danger is something that nobody can decide but the athlete who is putting his or her body on the line. However, if you or somebody in your life is thinking about joining the hardcore world of extreme sports, it is a good idea to do some research into what common injuries are, and how they can be prevented. - Parachuting Is Fun By : Kadence Buchanan -
What is the parachute? Nothing more than a thin, lightweight fabric, supported by tapes and suspension lines and attached to one's body by special strong shoulder and waist straps, called risers, once manufactured out of silk. However, the days when parachutes were made out of silk have long passed. During the Second World War the parachutes introduced were made out from more durable materials, like woven nylon fabric. Today's parachutes are made from a variety of long-lasting fabrics and materials, all selected to enhance performance and improve consistency over time; needless to say, something extremely important when one's life is at stake!
According to the online version of Encyclopedia Britanica, the parachute is "a device that slows the vertical descent of a body falling through the atmosphere or the velocity of a body moving horizontally." This is easier to understand, if one considers that through the use of a parachute a person increases his or her body's surface area, which results in increased air resistance and thus a body's motion slows down. Made out of soft and light fabrics, today's parachute is both a pilot's life savior device and a parachute fan's exciting experience. - Tips To Choose A Method Of Skydiving For You By : Dalvin Rumsey
If you are a skydiving beginner you'll need to read this article to learn which novice skydiving method to choose. There are three ways you can experience the thrill of skydiving and the only requirement is that you are at least eighteen years old and have a weight of under 250 pounds. You also have to be free of any heart disease or severe medical conditions. If you have had problems with your health you should discuss them with the drop zone officials
Skydiving courses, in most cases, work the same way. A certified instructor will get you trained and he'll try to scare you and make you not jump. That's because the only thing he doesn't want is a student that panics while free falling. You'll then have to fill a lot of papers that you must go through if you want to jump. These documents make sure that if you get hurt the company will not be responsible. These are very scary but you'll have to sign them if you want to jump. - Skydiving Training With Accelerated Free Fall By : Dalvin Rumsey
You can learn how to skydive in other ways but the most thrilling is to do it with the AAF (Accelerated Free Fall).
Accelerated Free Fall has first been used as a fast training method since 1982. It's a fast learning process compared to the traditional static line training. With AFF you can get a true image of the modern skydiving. - Top 5 Skydiving Safety Myths By : Dalvin Rumsey
People are afraid of skydiving mainly because there are a lot of myths related to it in the popular culture. These several inaccuracies that have been propagated are the biggest reason for skydiving fear. Here are four of these myths along with the real explanation.
Myth 1: During free fall you can't breathe
Fact: Breathing during free fall is possible, contrary to the way people tend to think. If breathing wouldn't be possible the skydiver wouldn't be able to open the parachute because they would be unconscious. - The Safety And The Risks In Skydiving By : Dalvin Rumsey
Skydiving is a sport that involves many risks. Safety and risks are different thing. While the risks are measured, the safety is judged. The safety can be defined as a personal or social acceptance of a given risk.
In what regards the risks, they are measured as quantities. The probability of something to happen combined with the severity of the repercussions give the risks. The probabilities and the severity are divided into categories. The probabilities have five such categories: Frequent, Probable, Occasional, Remote and Improbable and the severity of the action has four categories: Catastrophic, Critical, Marginal and Negligible. For instance, a rubber band breaking the risk is “frequent – negligible” while for a double malfunction the risk would be “remote – catastrophic”. “Occasional – catastrophic” or “occasional – critical” are the risks encountered most often for malfunctions. - A Beginner’s Guide To Rock Climbing Equipment By : Natalie Aranda
