In the Bible, there were many instances showing man's reluctance to come before God. Such reluctance might have stemmed from man's own inadequacy -- which, paradoxically, is a positive sign of salvation. Only when we become humble, fully aware of our own inadequacy, then we begin to come before God. The Bible reiterates this recurrent theme -- the weakest shall be the strongest, and the last shall be the first.
When Isaiah was asked to be the messenger of God to his people, Isaiah showed reluctance -- his reluctance was, in fact, his awareness of his own inadequacy.
"Then I said, 'Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips. And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts.'" (Isaiah 6:5)
However, when Isaiah's lips were touched by a live burning coal, he was told that his sins were completely forgiven.
The Apostle Paul said he was an eyewitness to the risen Christ.
"and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle because I persecuted the church of God." (1 Corinthians 15:7-9)
Here, Paul, who was "untimely born," showed his reluctance because of his perceived unworthiness due to his persecution of the church of God. But God had poured abundant kindness and grace upon him, despite his inadequacy.
"But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me." (1 Corinthians 15:10)
It was Paul's humility that overcome his reluctance and inadequacy, enabling him to come before God.
When Jesus told Peter to cast his nets for a catch, Peter, too, was reluctant, and he replied: "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets." (Luke 5:5) Peter showed his reluctance, but his inadequacy made him obedient. When Peter witnessed the miraculous catch of fish, he immediately threw himself before Jesus, saying: "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" (Luke 5:8) Peter was aware of his own adequacy and humbled himself before Christ. It was his humility that made Christ choose him as the first apostle and the founder of His church.
The Bible tells us that showing reluctance to come before God is humanly natural, due to our sinful nature, which separates us from God. However, it is the awareness of our own inadequacy that forms the link between man and God. In other words, humility is the bridge between God and man. Humility is the essence of obedience: like a slave obeying his master. Without humility, there is no obedience, and, without obedience, man cannot follow the commandments of God, and therefore cannot come before God.
