  • “service Animals” Where Do We Draw The Line?  By : Carl Hampton
When we see the visually impaired with their seeing eye dog, we think nothing of it. The dog does not make us uncomfortable because they are the most common pet. Dogs are man's best friend – so to speak. Seeing eye dogs can go everywhere: the bus, restaurants, the mall, and even the restroom. Those that are visually disabled need these four legged creatures as service animals, as animals they can depend on.

When the Indian Ocean tsunami crashed ashore on December 26, 2004, many things were lost. Homes were swept away, belongings gone forever. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives in the disaster. And many of those who survived, including children, literally lost a part of themselves.

Seven-year-old Tara Aulia and 11-year-old Hamdani survived the tsunami that ripped through their villages in Indonesia's Aceh province, but along with their homes and family members, both children lost a limb.

  • Wrong Blames Can Kill A Life  By : CD Mohatta
To blame means to accuse someone of doing something wrong. It is very easy to put blame on a person when things begin going wrong and hammer that person left and right for being responsible for all the mess. Let us look at this further.

Sometimes, in our personal relationships, when we say that things are in mess, the truth may be different. The situation may not be messy, but our viewpoint may have become messy. What we call as going wrong may indeed be going wrong, but not in the way we look at it. Let me try to explain. Some of us lie. We get caught, or feel guilty. We blame someone for exposing our lie and making a mess of something good. Can a lie be good? We wished our lies to flourish and keep us safe from the bitterness of truth, but our comfort zone got broken because of the exposure. Is this bad? Or our viewpoint was wrong to begin with? When we think more, we find that truth may be very bitter and highly discomforting, but it is always better than a lie. Is it correct to blame a person who exposed our lies? But we do that. Blame the other person for making us face the music. What the other person did was correct but since it hurts us, we accuse.
  • Will You Live Together Till Your Death?  By : CD Mohatta
Loving and living together make a wonderful life. If a couple is in deep love with each other, and loyal with the commitment of staying together till death, it will be a beautiful life. After all, we want relationships that survive. We want relationships that help us grow in life, fight the odds, and enjoy life.

Is this possible? The trend is to separate if there is any mismatch. How is it possible to find a partner with whom one can blissfully spend life together forever? To have such a blessed life, the first need is of caring for each other. When we genuinely care for the other person, we forgive a lot, we tolerate a lot and we adjust everything. The central reason is care. I care for my spouse. I love him/her and I know about all the habits that I hate and everything that is not very lovable. But my love and care looks away from all this and looks towards only one thing- care. Does a mother ever think of separating from her child? No- because she cares. And equally or rather more importantly, she can never imagine doing this.

  • Why So Many People Are Identity Theft Victims  By : annmarier (author)

  • Why Do We Celebrate Birthdays  By : Sam Vaknin
Why do we celebrate birthdays? What is it that we are toasting? Is it the fact that we have survived another year against many odds? Are we marking the progress we have made, our cumulative achievements and possessions? Is a birthday the expression of hope sprung eternal to live another year?

None of the above, it would seem.

  • Who Runs Public Opinion?  By : Gabriel
While there does exist informed individuals who follow and understand the important social, economic and cultural issues, for the greater part, most citizens pay little attention to the same, and when asked, pull their preferences off the tops of their heads. Since empowerment for interest groups comes from it (i.e. politicians will not be re-elected without public support), there must, therefore, be some mechanism in place for these groups to assess and access public opinion. Given the citizenry’s low information threshold, what appears to be public opinion can only be the cultivation, crystallization and communication of individual preferences into one collective mass by special interest groups who provide and control the flow of necessary information in accordance with agenda setting theory.
The strength of an individual’s interests and attitudes on the one hand and their policy preferences on the other depends in a large part on the level of information that they possess. Certainly, an informed citizen is a better one when considering the theory and underpinning of the democratic process, as it is understood in this country today. Yet, study after study demonstrates that the majority does not possess the level of information necessary to properly evaluate and assess important political, social and economic issues.
  • Who Is Selfish?  By : CD Mohatta
Who is not selfish in this world? Are all of us selfish? Do we always think of ourselves first? Will you call me selfish even if I donate a large part of my earnings? When will you call me a selfish person, and when will you say that I am not selfish? For that which qualities are needed in me? One more question - is selfishness bad always? Could the world have gone so forward if people were not selfish? Selfishness and selflessness, these two words can make us think about our society, our values, the world in bigger perspective, and ourselves. Let us begin.

A family earns money first to feed itself. If something extra is left, it may give a part to the society. It is for the family to decide about how much it will save for itself first and when and how much part of its surplus will it give to the society. If a family decides to save at least a year's expenses for itself and begin donating only after that, will you call it selfish? This is very subjective assessment. Am I correct? Another family, which has saved nothing for itself but begun donating, can call the earlier family selfish, and the earlier family can advise the second family to save for the rainy days first. This all sounds so confusing.
  • Who Is Evil  By : CD Mohatta
The world is made of good and evil people. There are some, who are nothing but emperors of evilness. Hitler was one such person. There are many like him. But we also have evil persons in our society who are generally not considered evil, but are evil. Let me give my thoughts on such people.

For me, a person who hits a stray dog with a stone just for fun is a bad person. One who gives pains to friends for no reason is a bad person. One who looks at wrong things, and decides to do nothing is evil. One who hurts feelings of loved ones is a bad person. One who lets other people sleep in hunger without doing anything about them is a bad person. One who wants bigger share of the pie is a bad person. One who shouts and makes others fear him/her is a bad person. One who never tries to understand feelings of others is a bad person. One who treats poor people as dirt, is a bad person. One who decides about characters by looks and passes judgments is a bad person. One who reads a sad story in the newspaper, without getting affected in any way is a bad person. One who shows no respect for those who work for others is a bad person. One who does not sympathize at others losses is a bad person. One who always tries to prove his/her superiority over others is a bad person. On and on I can write. What is not good is bad. That is how I call such people bad. Rather than calling them as not good persons, I call them as bad persons. All this may look quite shocking and many will protest about what all I have written above. All right, let me say, that I will not call the person a bad person, but the act as a bad act. I hope that now I am more acceptable.
  • Where Did Mardi Gras Come From?  By : Gregg Hall
There are varied opinions on the origins of Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday in French, the English call the holiday Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day. No matter where it takes place or what it is called Mardi Gras is an age old celebration. Carnival is considered the mother of Mardi Gras and originated in Rome leading to a popular way of feasting and being hedonistic before Lent. The celebration as it is known today is still celebrated in South America and in predominately Catholic countries in Europe.

  • What Refugees Should Do Upon Entering A New Country  By : John Morris
You may be an immigrant and not even realize it. So be sure to fill out the proper paperwork. Many people fail to do this and as a result how long they have lived within the country may come into question. If this happens and they have no documentation to back it up, they might be deported. Take your resident status seriously and don't keep putting it off.

  • What If Astrology Really Worked  By : CD Mohatta
There is a large population which looks at todays forecast the first thing in the morning newspaper. Every one of them desires to find out about their day in the columns. Do the predictions come true? Let me talk about this. Most of the forecast columns have four to five predictions. Practically no body writes down all of them and compares the forecast with actual happening at the end of the day. What we do is to remember something of the forecast and if anything comes true, we are delighted. We forget that the other three to four forecasts did not come true.

That is human nature. We want to believe something and find ways to prove that right. This is what we do with forecasts. None of us wants to critically analyze them because we are subconsciously worried that they can prove to be largely false. We also like to hear about what good may happen. We are all tired with worries and anxieties that we want some assurance that things are not that bad and they will improve. Astrologers use that weakness very intelligently.

  • Weird Weather News  By : Jonathon Hardcastle -
We are half-way through this warm weather month of August and the heat has become something of a burden and a hassle for many of us. Good thing the weather can be a source of amusement too sometimes. There were two reports last week about the weather that just made me smile. I’m re-telling them here in an effort to provide you with something to smile (or smirk) about this summer.

The first report, which originated from Moscow in Russia, recounted how Alyona Gabitova, a Russian woman from the town of Uljanovsk, was suing local weather forecasters for making a wrong prediction about the weather that ultimately ruined her holiday trip.
  • Wearing A Red Ribbon  By : Jonathon Hardcastle -
On February 7, 1985 at 2:00 p.m. the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was attacked by five men while opening his truck doors intending to drive and meet his wife for lunch. The beige Volkswagen were he was forced in disappeared that warm winter afternoon in the streets of Guadalajara, Mexico. One month later, Camarena's body was found savagely and grotesquely murdered.

When Camarena joined the US DEA, after having served as a Marine and becoming a police officer, his mother tried to convince him to resign, but he was determined to make a difference. In 1974, he was transferred to Guadalajara, Mexico, the center at the time of the drug trafficking empire and working as an undercover agent was investigating a major drug cartel believed to include officers in the Mexican army, the police and the government. A firm believer of the notion that even one person can make a difference in this world, Camarena, at the age of 37, sacrificed his life to prevent drugs from entering the United States schools and streets.

  • Urban Migration To Diversity  By : Gabriel
Until a few decades ago this movement of people was a migration – from a home country to a host country – with little, if any, interaction between those who migrated and those who stayed back. To a large extent, it can be argued, that the interaction was limited to the sending of remittances back home. With advances in the areas of transport and communication, migrants nowadays not only travel back and forth, and maintain constant touch with their families, but also play a more active part in the social, political and economic fields of both countries, than was ever possible before. What does this duality augur for the U.S.? How does the immigrant population, which is growing rapidly, affect life socially, economically and politically?

  • Ugly People Vs. Good-looking People  By : Ckint Jhonson
Essentially, people have changed very little in the past 2000 years. Even if we go further back in history, when discussing human nature, the idea stays generally the same. However, human appearance is a completely different story. If the desire to immortalize or create beauty has remained constant, the one thing that has changed is the actual perception of what beauty really means.
  • Two Views Of Social Responsibility  By : Jonathon Hardcastle -
Government regulation and public awareness are external forces that have increased the social responsibility of business. But business decisions are made within the company. Two contrasting philosophies, or models, define the range of management attitudes toward social responsibility; the economic and the socioeconomic model.

According to the traditional concept of business, a firm exists to produce quality goods and services, earn a reasonable profit and provide jobs. In line with this concept, the economic model of social responsibility holds that society will benefit more when business is left alone to produce and market profitable products that society needs. To the manager who adopts this traditional attitude, social responsibility is someone else's job. After all, stockholders invest in a corporation to earn a return on their investment, not because the firm is socially responsible and the firm is legally obligated to act in the economic interest of its stockholders.

Potsdam is easily accessible via S-bahn, and the museum is within walking distance of the Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (the main train station in Potsdam). The museum has a very modest entrance fee, but once inside, you are treated to all kinds of movie memorabilia.
  • Traits And Characteristics Of A Serial Killer - Part Two  By : Barney Garcia
Unorganized serial killers, share a slightly different profile. These types of serial killers tend to have below average intelligent levels and are considered to be socially inadequate; often living alone and someone who does not date. They are usually high school drop outs and have minimal interest in the media. They tend to keep a messy house and have poor hygiene. They tend to leave the body intact with a crime scene high in evidence.

There are seven types of motives that drive serial killers to kill. These include visions that the killer claims have come to them “guiding them to kill”, a desire to rid the population of a certain race or type of individual, hedonistic reasons; meaning the killer gets pleasure from the violence, lust; in which they kill for sexual gratification (whether the actual act of sex occurs or not), for thrill, for personal gain such as money or material goods, and power seekers, who like to control the death time of others in order to feel in control of their own lives.

  • Today’s police gear  By : Ken Wilson
Police officers have a job full of dangers and risks. When taking a job within the police, the officers accept the risk of being injured or even killed. In order to be able to continue to serve the public, they have to keep themselves healthy and in good shape. Their safety is more important than the offender’s safety. The offender may be dangerous or armed, may decide to defy or to comply. The police gear has a very important role in helping the officers to carry out their duties. Still, good tactical gear does not make a good cop: years of training, discipline and great passion for the job are necessary.

Contact lenses have caught the fancy of youth like anything and seem determined to keep their success rate up for ever. Born as vision correction devices, they have traversed a checkered path to become fashion accessories of the modern times. They are so good at changing your looks that you suddenly appear metamorphosed into someone you are definitely not.

One is left wondering where does the look come from- from the lens, from the face or from the interaction of both. Actually, the difference lies in the face and how the face, the lens and the color of the eyes mishmash with each other. So, now, the lens is king. However, there are a few things that every wearer of the contacts must keep in mind.

  • Time Changes And Values Changes  By : Gabriel
As civilization progressed and the ape descended from the tree to walk upright, and then with the passage of time went on to fly in a space shuttle around the earth, what is considered indispensable by the species Homo sapiens has changed a great deal. Probably one of the very few areas which is still considered a necessity and which continues to prove an elusive goal is a state of global peace in which the finest capabilities of mankind could attain fulfilment.

“Take Back the Night” events across the country in April are a grim reminder of just how serious a problem crime against women has become. • The Vast Potential Of Human Cloning  By : Jonathon Hardcastle -
Think of a world where infertile, childless couples can go to a medical clinic, purchase cell replacements for malfunctioning cells in the reproductive system and, thus, bear kids; a world where people afflicted with degenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Disease can replace their damaged cells and be cured again; a world where the crippled can get the much-needed cells to revive their spinal chord and walk again.

Those amazing medical and scientific feats are only the tip of the iceberg when the potential of human cloning is concerned. Developed to its extreme, human cloning can make disease and sickness, maybe even physical suffering altogether, a thing of the past.
  • The Umbrella Mystery  By : john
Many are familiar with the image of an Anglo-Saxon gentleman, who walks in the rain while protected by an umbrella held by his servant over his head. Numerous representations, like the famous drawing of Thomas Wright “Domestic Manners of the English,” portray the image of England’s early seventieth century gentlemen. The famous Sherlock Holmes, who made his first public appearance in 1887, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional detective character, was depicted in various media as wearing a deerstalker hat and cloak, smoking a pipe and clutching a magnifying glass. His comrade and friend Dr. John H. Watson who following and helped him during his investigating endeavors, was depicted in film holding a long and probably heavy umbrella which Holmes sometimes also used by leaning on while thinking over the facts of a case.
  • The Steps Needed For Obtaining A Green Card  By : Ckint Jhonson

Nevertheless, she is not only a rich celebrity but a true American symbol, adored by millions of people.
  • The Population Control Controversy  By : Gabriel
Many problems surface with this argument. Overcrowding may not be the root cause of such problems. Although the belief that too many people in a region outstrip vital resources like food and water may seem logical, it may ignore the fact that the resources were not adequate enough in the first place. Overpopulation might only be contributing to a problem that has many other deeper causes. In addition, governmental plans to control family planning may be unethical. Many people are stunned by China’s policy of one child per family. Others view the United Nations’ fervent implementation of birth control education in Africa as too assuming and arrogant, as imperialism at its worst. Many agree that human life is sacred to the extent that the right to life exists. The crucial question when analyzing the problem of controlling population is whether or not people have the right to create life. This essay will briefly explore both sides of the debate about population control as the solution for averting poverty in a nation.
  • The Old School Stands Strong  By : Dave Carter
There has been a strong trend recently towards on-line greeting cards, or e-cards, as they are more commonly referred to. The automatic assumption would then be that normal greeting cards, the traditional hallmark (bad pun intended) of birthdays, holidays, and graduations would be on the decline, but according to Hallmark Cards and American Greetings (by far and away the two largest producers of greeting cards in the United States) that is not the case, and both companies have actually continued to sell more cards the last few years than before.
  • The New Trend Called Body Piercing  By : David Fishman
Getting your nipples or genital pierced has become very popular among both men and women, while the other types of piercing like tongue, nose and eye brow or naval are still gender specific. Back thousands of years ago Body piercing jewelry was popular among tribes as a sign of wealth and prosperity; you can see a lot of references of body piercing in the bible. Although body piercing jewelry was not popular until about 20 years ago, it actually has a very long history. Look through the archives the first recorded body jewelry piercing comes from evidence in the middle east of a nose ring piercing recorded over 4,000 years ago.
  • The Knife Culture In Britain  By : Blueboy
Britain has currently got a knife amnesty in place. This where people are able to hand in their knives without the fear of prosecution, the amnesty is in place until the end of June. The hope is that it will reduce the amount of crimes involving knives including of course murders. The last amnesty was very successful according to the latest reports and one can only hope that this latest attempt also proves to be a success. Something needs to be done as I am hearing about more and more deaths at the hands of this knife culture and the problem seems to be getting out of control.

I have had personal experience about Britains knife culture. When I was about eighteen years of age I went out for a few drinks with a number of my close friends. We all ending up getting quite drunk and I ended up walking home with three of these friends. On the way home we passed a group of four men all in their twenties. They pushed passed us in an aggressive way making a number of nasty comments at the same time.
  • The History Of Chase Field  By : Aurel Radulescu
Formerly known as BankOne Ballpark, Chase Field officially opened it’s doors in 1998. Following a merger with BankOne and J.P. Morgan Chase & Company, the stadium’s name officially changed to Chase Field. It’s design was created under the architectural insight of Ellerbe Becket and Bill Johnson and construction began in 1995 by Huber, Hunt & Nichols Inc. Upon it’s completion, Chase Field was estimated to have cost between $350-400 million. Of that, 68% was derived from a portion of sales tax and the remaining 32% from the owners of the Arizona Diamondbacks themselves.

In 1998, the Arizona Diamondbacks entered into what would be a very promising year. As they enjoyed competing at their newly constructed stadium, the Diamondbacks went on to win seven Major League Baseball games in a row, which tied them for the record of the longest winning streak in history by any expansion team.
  • The Growth Of Gated Communities And Their Impact Of Social Segregation  By : Natalie Aranda
Gated communities have always been with us. This dates back to the very earliest civilizations where the very wealthy have favored high walls and closed gates that have turned their communities into very private communities. In addition to providing increased security, the purposes of these communities were to foster segregation, and increase the sense of exclusion. Put bluntly, the rich desired to separate themselves from their less socially advanced neighbors.

In recent years there has been an increase in the construction of gated communities in the United States. At the same time, these communities are becoming less the exclusive haven of the very rich, and have become more and more the choice of the upper middle class and even middle class homeowner. The major reason cited for this increase is the desire for more personal safety. Fueled by a media that almost constantly bombards us with images of violence and crime, people have become more fearful. The idea of the walls and the controlled access gates promises an escape from this fear. Inside the walls, surrounded by neighbors who share their values, people feel safer. The are not as fearful to approach old age, or raise their children there.
  • The Growing Popularity Of Hats  By : Mary Lorainne
Now, who doesn’t own a hat nowadays? I believe that almost everyone owns at least one hat or has at least worn one. A hat also shields your face from the scorching sun, protects your head from the heat and warms it when it is cold. When you have a bad hair day, you can use the hat to cover your hair and avoid looking hideous. Truly, hats were created for several purposes and not only to serve as a fashion statement
  • The Gold Rush In Ontario  By : Amy Nutt -
The year was 1926. The big news of the day was that a gold rush had broken out in the relatively remote Red Lake area of Northern Ontario. A great number of newspapers and reporters from all over the world traveled to Ontario to cover the great gold rush of 1926. Adventurers, explorers, and gold diggers from all over the world traveled to this remote location to grab their share of fortune, and perhaps fame, at this great gold strike. Soon, professional mining companies set their focus to this literal pot of gold that had seemingly popped out of nowhere with the vague promise of untold riches. Airplanes roared overhead and the barking of dogs could be heard and seen hot on the trail over the frozen lake.

  • The Disintermediation Of New Technologies  By : Kadence Buchanan -
In economics, disintermediation is the removal of intermediaries in a supply chain. Disintermediation is often the result of high market transparency, in that buyers are aware of supply prices direct from the manufacturer. As a result, buyers bypass the middlemen (wholesalers and retailers) in order to buy directly from the manufacturer and thereby pay less. Buyers can alternatively elect to purchase from wholesalers, but most often, a buyer-to-consumer intermediary functions as the bridge between buyer and manufacturer. A few years ago, scholars wrote that the Internet would "disintermediate" industries or eliminate middlemen. Instead, the lower cost of selling over the Net and its immense appeal have produced even more middlemen, which helps explain the success of the search giant Google and the online marketplace eBay.

Technology offers a vast variety of different choices to the end user and the social implications of their adoption create the appropriate atmosphere for people to debate their usefulness and consequences. But whether one is a supporter or an opponent of this technological evolution, the new reality introduced by the adopted technologies surpassed the creators' intentions and emerged into this new "real" world in which relationships evolve, people exchange information, work or even develop themselves as citizens. At the same time, word abbreviations, images, Avatars, icon-bars, virtual reality games or weblogs, are some of the multiple ways with which new technologies have altered the way people interact and have managed to create new subcultures and representations of reality. The adopters of these communication methods relate heavily on the existence and improvement of the used medium, as it must continue to incorporate the advances of other practices and continuously be updated.
  • The Decline Of The Local Newspaper  By : Blueboy
I have recently been hearing about how our local newspapers (in the UK) are falling into decline due to a raft of competition from various alternative media sources such as the internet.

I live in Birmingham and I am the type of person who loves to play and watch sports. Where I live we have a famous Saturday nights sports paper which arrives in the shops at around 6pm, it is called The Sports Argus and is pink in colour. This paper has been a must buy for my family for as long as I can remember and it includes all of the days football results and the latest football tables. It also has match reports from all of the local teams as well as a lot of information about other sports including the horse racing and its results. This paper will no longer be available as it appeared in the shops for the last time around three weeks ago.
  • The Classic Beauty Of A Dior Handbag  By : Michelle Bery -
For women, there’s no greater luxury than designer clothing – those beautiful outfits we wait for every season – brought to us by design houses that are synonymous with upscale fashion. But just as designer clothes are revered and desired, so are designer handbags. What may be a functional accessory for some, is a fashion statement for others. And for those people, the Dior handbag rates high on the list of desirable handbags.

French designer, Christian Dior, opened his first design house in 1949 in New York City. But his designs began years before that – embraced by an audience hungry for new creativity. Before long, Dior was a name inseparable from high fashion and enthusiasts awaited the new pieces that were added to the collection year after year. But before long, the Dior handbag was a part of the Dior collection – a glamorous and functional accessory that was eagerly awaited by consumers.
  • The Chinese Symbol Of Accepting Change  By : Kadence Buchanan -
Tao or Dao is a Chinese character that refers to a pivotal feature of Chinese philosophy and religion. One of its most generic translations is that of "the way" or "head path." Those who have studied its meaning, place it in a variety of concepts, like that of religion, knowledge, rationality, morality, duty or truth. Central component of Taoism, Tàijítú, which is the black and white symbol of Tao, is considered to convey the fundamental force of nature, or the "noble way" of personal conduct in life. From its discourse as the "Great Tao" or the guiding principle behind all universal processes, Tao extends beyond being and non-being and is considered to transcend the boarders of space and time.

The all-present Tao is the intelligent ordering principle behind the unceasing flow of change in the natural world. In fact, Tao has gained its great significance within its believers as being another theistic representation of the Greek concept of logos or better stated that of God. Tao is the essence of reality and the understanding of change. In fact, many consider it impossible to describe it and concentrate on feeling and observing its different meanings. Its two colors represent antithesis and conjunction, as black is considered to be the absence of light, while white represents the light in all its states. For Chinese philosophers, the black represents the yin or feminine principle, while the white represents the yang or masculine principle. In essence, Tao is the relation between these two opposite but nevertheless complementary principles. Consequently, Tao is the flow of energy in any living object and symbolizes the way in which these two principles behave in life. With the two opposite colored dots inside each complementary feature of the tàijítú image, Chinese reveal the fact that within Yin there is a little of Yang; the white dot inside the black portion of the symbol and reversely. Some argue that this represents the love Yin and Yang feel for each other and thus they enter each other's spheres and interact with each other's nature.

  • Students Chip In To Help Katrina Victims  By : Kadence Buchanan -
While most college students on spring break are busy sunning up and partying down in exotic locales such as Cancun, there are others who are content to sacrifice their spring break to help those less fortunate. The deadly hurricane Katrina caused irreparable damage to New Orleans and its surrounding areas, and many sympathetic college students stepped up to the plate to help those in need. Several different charities helped to organize the event which featured the students assisting in a multitude of ways, from cleaning up flooded elementary schools to helping rebuild roofs. At some estimates, ten thousand college students showed up to lend their time.

Students came from across America, showing their dedication to charity work and helping those in need. The students often paid out-of-pocket the costs associated with traveling to the broken city, and many groups stayed in sleeping bags in gymnasiums that offered little comfort or privacy. The selflessness of the individuals associated with this cause truly has to be commended. At an estimated $20 per hour salary, these students donated more than $20,000,000, and while there's much more work to be done, it represents definite hope for the future generation.

I’m a caring person, you see. In fact, I’m so caring that my compassion is not confined to our species alone. If there was a similar petition floating around for the eradication of every thousandth Sumatran Tiger born, I would again make up an excuse not to sign.

  • Setis Online Quest For Extra Terrestrials  By : Jonathon Hardcastle -
Space. The great beyond. Are we alone in the galaxy? Researchers at the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, have pondered the question for years. Drawing on high-powered radio telescopes, SETI has been scanning the stars for years, searching for answers to the questions that our existence poses. While the search has relied upon private funding and dedicated researchers for years and years, they've created an opportunity to help the search from the courtesy of your own home.

A program was created by the researchers to help coordinate data analysis, which they dubbed SETI@home. The program is a client which can be downloaded from the website http://setiathome.berkeley.edu and it allows armchair scientists a chance at discovering rogue signals from alien galaxies. Self-governing, the program downloads chunks of data that were picked up by SETI's telescopes and analyzes it for any possible anomalies. Launched in May of 1999, the program has seen much success as a means for processing large chunks of data. Functioning like a virtual supercomputer, the processing power used on a day-to-day basis for scanning the skies is enormous. Over 5.2 million people have participated in the program worldwide, contributing over two million years of computing time collectively. As of April 17th of 2006, the processing power of the computers linked to SETI@home rests at around 250 Teraflops. By comparison, the strongest supercomputer in the world, Blue Gene, can process 280 Teraflops, slightly more than the SETI network. There are plenty of dedicated individuals giving their computer's processing power to the site.

  • Reading The Signs Of The Times  By : Jonathon Hardcastle -
Several decades ago, Mohandas K. Gandhi warned against what he called the seven social sins: politics without principle, wealth without work, commerce without morality, pleasure without conscience, education without character, science without humanity, and worship without sacrifice.

Gandhi's social sins point to the crucial relationship between our ethics and our public life. That relationship has proven in the 21st Century to be the main subject in scholarly debates and the primary focus of constant questioning regarding the future course of human interaction, in relation to the latest technological advancements. In the vast global marketplace, people have to redefine themselves according to their needs and classify their wants/desires along a streamline of corporate offers. Incorporating ethos, dignity and self-awareness in this new technological era has become more than a challenge for today's consumers. At the same time, corporate actors begin to steadily realize that their survival depends heavily on recognizing this battlefield and to act proactively so as to come up with innovative flexible channels to service their targets. Redefining these new competent and knowledge markets has become for firms a must that needs to be carefully planned before attempting to indulge consumer minds.

  • Prozac Returns  By : Kadence Buchanan -
In the late eighties and early-nineties, Prozac was pronounced as the new wonder drug, a magical cure for depression that was patronized by millions of people worldwide. Prozac was later discredited when murmurs spread that it could spur suicidal tendencies in regular users. These days, Prozac is making a big comeback in the most unlikely of places: law enforcement.

Online news reports last June 25 graphically detailed the latest plan of the United Kingdom to control sex offenders - feed them with Prozac until they're calm as lambs. It seems the British government, impressed with Prozac's calming effects, plans to administer the controversial drug to jailed pedophiles and other sex offenders. In doing this, they hope to tame the beastly nature of the inmates and shackles their libidos so they do not commit any more heinous crimes.

  • Procrastination – Why People Delay?  By : CD Mohatta
To delay or postpone an action that needs to be done is procrastination. I will do this afterwards. There is enough time still. What do these people think by setting deadlines? I have my own priorities. This is boring. What I don't do this work at all? Ultimately what will I gain by doing this? Why cannot I have some freedom? Why everything needs to be done on time? These are all typical thoughts of a procrastinator. Rather if we finish a job in given time, we feel happier. But a lot many of us procrastinate. What are the possible reasons?

The first cause may be doing something means dropping something else which is more comfortable. Ask any smoker about when he/she proposes to drop the habit and the answer always mentions some time in future -never the present. Delay the process of pain and get as much pleasure as possible. But the pleasure that a procrastinator derives by delay is itself a pain. On the other hand if the procrastinator finishes the job in time, the pleasure of doing something unpleasant will be far greater. It also enhances self-esteem. But we still procrastinate. Is that not mysterious?
