Blueboy's Articles in Stress Management

  • Social Phobia/social Anxiety Disorder
Social phobia or social anxiety disorder is the constant fear of being criticized or evaluated by other people. People who suffer from social phobia are excessively self-conscious to the point where they feel that everyone around them is looking at them and judging them harshly. They become nervous, anxious and afraid of the world around them. For those with social phobia, everyday social situations like parties can become highly intimidating ordeals.

The key to the problem is that people with social anxiety want to be liked. They want very much to be seen as witty, dynamic and sociable. They want to fit in. However their anxiety about not performing well in public is so strong that it tends to cripple their best efforts. They freeze when they meet new people, particularly if they want these people to like them, for instance because they feel attracted to them or because they look up to them. They are afraid that their anxiety will be noticeable and this fear causes the anxiety to grow and turn into a vicious cycle.
  • Commitment Phobia
Commitment phobia is the fear and avoidance of having to commit to anything, relationships in particular.

  • Stuttering And It Can Impact On A Persons Life
For people who are fluent, it is hard to comprehend what it must be like to have a stutter. This article describes some of the tasks that can prove difficult and stressful for the person who has a stutter, tasks which fluent people simply take for granted.

My name is Stephen Hill and I am somebody who has managed to overcome a stutter which had affected my life for eighteen years. When I was at school, I would dread the time when I would have to read out aloud in class out of a book. I would count down to which paragraph I would have to read and then I would look through to see which words I was going to have to say. I was hoping that there would not be many words beginning with b,d,v, or g, as I found these words especially hard to say. When speaking in a conversation I would always try to avoid these words or would think of an alternative word to say. When reading though, you have to read what is written. I had many unpleasant days attempting to read and I am now very happy those days are over.

Then I met a man who was around fifty while working on a project at work. We were having a chat one day when he stated that I was a depressive person who rarely smiled. What he said was quite upsetting and disturbing, however would have a profound effect on my future.

At one point a work colleague made a comment that he thought that I walked around with the weight of the world's problems on my shoulders. My hair started to turn grey when I was only twenty-one years of age. Things though had to and were about to change.

I realised that the way I was living my life was not only probably unhealthy but was also a very unhappy one. By the age of twenty-two I decided to attempt to change the way I lived my life. I believed that I needed a change of attitude, I was somebody who was extremely negative and the first thing I worked on was trying to become a far more positive thinker.
  • My Phobia For Travelling By Air
This article is all about the fear of flying in aeroplanes. If you have this fear or phobia, you are not alone. I myself do not exactly enjoy the experience and it was not until I was eighteen years of age that I managed to pluck up enough courage to travel by air. I hope you enjoy the read.

Personally, I like to be in control of whatever I do. I stay away from any danger and have never been one for things like roller-coasters. I do not need that particular thrill to rock my boat. Some people call me a wimp, which is probably correct. The thought of travelling by air therefore did not exactly excite me, I have to admit it scared the living daylights out of me. When I drive a car I have an element of control, if the aircraft crashes for whatever reason, my life could be over. I am not the pilot, I am unable to observe any servicing to the aircraft and I do not know its history.

I had always wanted to be popular, liked and part of the in crowd. I bent over backwards to achieve this and often did and went to places that I did not want to go to, just to please other people. You should not bow down to peer pressure but I certainly did. I am not really sure why I craved this attention but I seemed to have a need to be liked. I was constantly paranoid that people were talking behind my back and laughing at me.

I am the type of person who always saw life as one big struggle. I thought that I had it tough, that I was so unfortunate. To say that I worried about things was an understatement. I stressed so much that my hair began to turn grey by the age of twenty-one. My self-esteem had been shot to pieces by people who had bullied me at school and despite many attempts to achieve happiness, had not been able to find it. I was a very negative thinker and certainly did not appreciate what I actually did have in life, which were a superb family and some good friends.

The HSE (Health & Safety Executive)recently launched a new campaign based at employers to manage stress at work for all employees which sent panic round many industry sectors.
Stress being explained as the "adverse effect people have to excessive pressure" summed up our assumptions of stress in the workplace with many people going off ill with stress but also G.P's not knowing enough about the symptoms and ready to sign off people for weeks on end without a full diagnosis.
