The Fox Theatre was originally designed to be a Shriners' temple but the Shriners budget fell short of what was required and they sold it to William Fox in 1927. Mr. Fox turned the temple into an incredible theatre which opened its doors in 1929. The building was a masterpiece and included such architectural features as Onion domes and minarets. Features which make it stand out from the surrounding buildings and homes. When you entered the theatre you were greeted by a 140 foot entrance arcade which led to a grand lobby complete with gold fish pools and an imported marble kiosk which was the ticket booth. The theatres designers spared no expense in its design. The theatre soon fell on hard times however because of the Great Depression and would be forced to close its doors in only 3 short years. Since that time it has gone through several different stages. It has been used as an opera house, for concerts and even had a large screen and stereo system installed in the 50s. The outlook for the theater was bleak until a group of citizens raised almost 2 million dollars to save the theater from demolition in 1978. Since then it has been lovingly restored to its former opulence and hosts everything from Broadway shows to comedy acts.
