  • Web Site Created To Connect Communities
There's good news for Internet users who find searching for information about their interests can be time consuming and frustrating.

A free search engine and interactive Web site has been created. Its purpose is to connect people with their local and interest-based communities and provide only the most relevant search results based on a user's search parameters.
  • Five Ways Local Businesses Can Market Themselves On The Web
Local businesses need to be creative and smart to compete in the fast-moving digital economy. Today, consumers turn to the Internet first, rather than the Yellow Pages, to find everything from a good restaurant to a local hardware store. This makes it essential for local businesses to advertise on the Web, and in doing so, they directly reach a wider audience of potential local customers at a fraction of the cost of print advertising.

While there are numerous opportunities for Internet marketing and advertising, there are five methods that are proving to be the quickest, easiest and most cost effective for local businesses to reach new customers, as well as expand relationships with existing customers:
  • Internet Now Third-most-popular Source For Fun And News For Americans
Just the other day, I found my 18-year-old son laughing at the antics of Gilligan and the skipper. If you're a TV channel surfer, like me, you know that re-runs of "Gilligan's Island," a sitcom icon of pop TV in the 1960s, are still a part of our TV landscape. But my son wasn't lounging on the couch with a TV remote in his hand. He was watching Gilligan do his thing on his PC, thanks to AOL's new free video service. It's all part of the increasing importance of the Internet and our home PCs as a growing source of entertainment and news.

According to a Nielsen study released in January of 2006 by the Television Bureau of Advertising (TVB), the Internet now ranks in position three in the stack of how Americans allocate their free time, just behind TV and radio, and ahead of newspapers and magazines. The survey of 1,183 people found that U.S. adults spent an average of 264.5 minutes per 24 hours watching TV, compared to 125.5 minutes for radio, 85 for the Internet, 20 for newspapers and 16.3 with magazines.
  • Finding Something To Scream About
If you've ever seen a horror movie, you may be surprised that people actually sign up to be victims. But that's exactly what's happening across the country.

Before you break into a cold sweat, know that "victim" is just a name FEARnet uses for horror fans when they chat online. It's part of a larger trend creeping into the mainstream that centers on the $1 billion a year horror movie industry.
  • Complex Products
Even as more and more consumers are beginning to feel comfortable online when shopping for such everyday items as books, music and clothing, many are still hesitant to pick out more complex products--cars, digital cameras, cell phones, etc.--without a salesperson to guide them through the process.

Fortunately, there's a Web site that helps take the intimidation out of major purchases. Called myproductadvisor.com, the site helps shoppers narrow their focus and save time while ultimately finding products that are better suited to their needs and preferences.
  • Online Calendars Can Help Families Coordinate
There's good news for those who find it a challenge to keep the whole family on schedule and need to know when and where everyone has to be. The kitchen calendar has long served families well, but with more people on the go and spending more time on the Web than ever, it may be time to take a look at some Internet-based calendars that do a lot of the work of "managing your schedule" for you.

In fact, according to the PEW Internet & American Life Project, 46 percent of Internet users who say they plan gatherings or arrange personal meetings use the Internet to do so. Here are six convenient and effective ways to use an online calendar, whose main advantage is letting multiple people securely view and add to the same calendar:
  • You Too Can Be On Youtube
With Google's recent billion dollar acquisition of YouTube, it seems as though the era of digital video hasn't arrived, it's exploded. For many traditional camcorder users, the transition to digital may seem a little intimidating, but today's technology is so concise that digital videos can actually be made with inexpensive, easy-to-use camcorders small enough to fit into the palm of your hand-with better quality than your cell phone camera.

More than just birthday parties. Today's camcorders are for so much more than school plays and children's birthday parties. Realtors use them to post virtual digital video tours of their listings online, home improvement fanatics are now documenting their own "Extreme Makeover Home Edition" experiences, and insurance companies are even using digital videos of homes, cars and offices to make decisions on large claims due to robberies or natural disasters. As costs have come down and technologies changed, digital camcorders are more frequently owned and used by consumers and business professionals for a variety of purposes, and not just capturing the family holidays.
  • Making Photo And Video Sharing A Breeze
Chances are, you or a relative received a digital or video camera this holiday season. Yet for all but the seasoned shutterbug, there remains a problem: After capturing all those great memories, how do you share them?

Rather than letting them languish, you can take advantage of free online services that let you store and present your digital adventures. It's certainly a better option than e-mailing huge video files or "fat" photos that can clog recipients' in-boxes. But with so many services to choose from, there are many factors to consider:
