- Why Are Men More Overweight Than Women?
Male obesity has become a weighty topic...and it's on the rise in the United States. Although weight-loss programs and diet trends often focus on women, the American Obesity Association found that the prevalence to be overweight is higher for men (67 percent) than women (62 percent). In fact, a recent study from the National Institute of Health (NIH), conducted over 30 years, showed nine out of 10 men and seven out of 10 women were overweight or became overweight. But despite being more prone to obesity, only 39 percent of men are on a diet or would try a diet to lose weight, as opposed to 70 percent of women.
While some men do place importance on health and weight loss, their approach is different than women, and therefore guys are hesitant to go on a diet. In fact, according to the NIH, 66 percent of men say they eat the foods they like regardless of calories, which leaves men wondering how can they eat what they want and still lose weight. - How Can You Lose Weight And Save Money At The Same Time?
One way to save money while achieving a healthy weight may be to open a pretax health account.
That's because some weight- loss expenses can be paid for with pretax dollars. - Healthful Weight Loss
Finding a diet that you can stick with can be challenging. Sometimes it's a matter of personal preference, but in other cases, it's a question of tolerance. For example, some people are unable to digest certain food ingredients-such as lactose or gluten- which limits what they can eat as part of a diet plan.
To help make it easier for people who not only have difficulty digesting milk and milk products but also want to lose weight, Slim-Fast has announced the introduction of a line of Easy to Digest weight-loss shakes that are lactose and gluten free and have enhanced nutritional benefits. The new shakes contain higher percentages of vitamins B6, B12 and D-nutrients that are important for people over 50-and are an excellent source of vitamins C and E. One shake also provides 50 percent of the Recommended Daily Value for calcium, an essential nutrient that is often deficient in the diets of people who are lactose intolerant. - Tips To Help Families Shape Up And Fight Obesity
On a scale of one to 10, obesity ranks uncomfortably high as a threat to the nation's health. Unfortunately, the rates of obesity in the United States continue to gain, with about one-third of the adults overweight and nearly another third obese. Obesity in both young people and adults is responsible for higher rates of diabetes, hypertension and other health problems.
While a big part of the problem is the amount of food put on families' plates, another part is not getting enough physical exercise. Although there are countless ways parents and youngsters can participate in activities together, it doesn't always happen. - New Weight Loss Option For People With Food Intolerance
An estimated 25 percent of the American population suffers from lactose maldigestion, also known as lactose intolerance. And according to a recent study, more than one-third of these individuals are actively on a diet or trying to lose weight.
In response, Slim-Fast has introduced a line of Easy to Digest weight loss shakes that have enhanced nutritional benefits specifically designed for dieters who want to lose weight, yet have difficulty digesting milk and milk products. - Slim Down Your Holiday Dishes
I love holiday foods like pumpkin pie and candied sweet potatoes. But as I get older, I'm noticing that I have to pay more attention to what I eat during the holidays-gaining weight is all too easy. That is why I love tips for slimming down holiday dishes without giving up flavor or tradition. Here are a few of my favorites:
• Cut back on butter. Many vegetable dishes, muffins and quick breads taste just as good when you use half or two-thirds the amount of butter, margarine or oil in the recipe. - Tips To Help Your Diet Stick
Millions of people across the country are dieting right now. In fact, 20 percent of Americans are undergoing some weight-loss regimen, with many more watching what they eat without using any particular dieting program.
Unfortunately, those diets don't always work. Hunger often trumps women's otherwise steadfast dedication to making healthy eating choices. Research reveals that weight-conscious women's eating habits can swing drastically from good to bad, across the day and throughout the week. - Yes, Virginia, You Can Manage Your Weight During The Holidays
You may think the only workouts you'll get during November and December will be fighting off crowds at the mall, power-walking to the sale racks, feverishly addressing holiday cards, and hoisting tray after tray of Christmas cookies into the oven.
Not so, according to Lisa Talamini, RD-Chief Nutritionist and Program Director for Jenny Craig, Inc. "Even during this hectic time of year, you can still find time to exercise and maintain a positive mindset," says Talamini. "In fact, with all the hustle and bustle of shopping, baking and entertaining, it's probably more important than ever to move your body and nurture your spirit." - A Secret For Managing Your Weight
We all know people who skip breakfast because they say it makes them hungrier. But here's a secret that you might find hard to believe--eating breakfast, particularly ready-to-eat cereal, can play a helpful role in weight management.
The news is good for ready-to-eat cereal fans. Studies show that frequent cereal eaters--both adults and children--tend to have healthier body weights. In fact, among successful weight-loss maintainers, 78 percent ate breakfast every day, and 60 percent of breakfast eaters always or usually chose cereal. - A Healthy Weight Versus A Healthy Body
When it comes to staying healthy, it seems many women may give too much weight to what their bathroom scales have to say.
"You don't have to be thin to be healthy−−and you're not necessarily in poor health if you're overweight. Being healthy is a lifelong journey of informed and focused health decisions, with an understanding of how weight affects health, not a pursuit of weight-loss gimmicks or fad diets," explains Dr. Pamela Peeke, medical advisor to the National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC). - More Dieters Finding Weight Loss Help Online

At a time when Americans are bombarded with competing claims for weight-loss products and services, a recent survey from the Partnership for Essential Nutrition (PEN) finds that dieters who lose weight through a comprehensive program of a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity and a supportive environment-the method advocated by public health officials-are the most satisfied with their results.
Conversely, the survey shows that less than one-fourth of dieters (23 percent) are using this method. Instead, the poll finds that many consumers are making decisions based on popular dieting myths. For example, most Americans (55 percent) still don't know that consuming fewer calories is what leads to weight loss and 69 percent buy into the myth that eating certain foods in combination enhances weight loss. - Weighing In
My friends and I used to enjoy comparing our weight to so-called "ideal" weight charts. We spent a lot of time making sure that our height was accurate and trying to figure out whether our frame was small, medium or large. Figuring out your recommended (or ideal) weight is easier today using body mass index (BMI) charts that are readily available on-line and in brochures.
Body weight is important because it is linked to good health. People who maintain a "healthy" body weight have less chance of developing long-term illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and arthritis. A BMI chart can tell you whether your weight is in the healthy, overweight or obese range.
